Visit to Toronto - Mental Health

The event was presented in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario in honour of Workman Arts’ 25th anniversary. Seen here is a dress that is part of the Passion collection by Peter Mulcair.

During their visit, they met with researchers and students to learn about the most up-to-date advanced research on mental illness.

Their Excellencies went to Toronto to raise public awareness of mental health issues and to encourage greater social acceptance of Canadians living with mental illness. Accompanied by Dr. Catherine Zahn, president and CEO (right), they visited the Imaging Centre and laboratories of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

In the evening, Their Excellencies attended the Mad Couture Catwalk.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston delivered remarks. Her Excellency was delighted to attended the event. She is interested in exploring the art of parenting among Canadian families. Some of the issues she wishes to focus on include the unique challenges faced by those marginalized in society. 

The wearable couture presented during the Mad Couture Catwalk was created by artists of Workman Arts, an arts and mental health company. The Dress seen here is part of the Bedlam Collection by Lisa Walter.

The runway-style presentation of wearable couture is aimed at challenging norms, shifting boundaries and inspiring dialogue about mental illness and creativity. This dress is part of the Mental Chaos collection by Annalise Walmer.

Workman Arts facilitates aspiring, emerging and established artists with mental illness and addiction issues to develop and refine their talents through training programs, public performances or exhibit opportunities, and by partnering with other art organizations.
