Visit to Nova Scotia - Day 1

His Excellency delivered a speech on the power of learning and the role of colleges and polytechnics in creating a smarter, more caring world: “Human development, let us remember, is at its core about expanding the choices available to people so that they may lead lives they value. And education—while providing no guarantees—is nevertheless the primary means by which we can increase our choices and thrive as human beings.”

Upon his arrival at the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics’ World Congress in Halifax, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, was greeted by the President and CEO of Centennial College Ms. Anne Buller, and President and CEO of the Assocation of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) Mr. James Knight.

Ms. Buller also delivered remarks. The Congress, hosted by ACCC and the Nova Scotia Community College, attracts some 800 institutional leaders, senior government officials, international partners, faculty and students from 50 different countries.

His Excellency also attended The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ceremony at Saint Mary's University. Nova Scotia President of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ms. Carole Thompson delivered remarks.

National President of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Peter Melanson also said a few words.

In his remarks, His Excellency acknowledged the participants’ various achievements within their respective communities.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award were presented by His Excellency to youth from the Maritime Provinces.
