Visit to Calgary and Vancouver - Day 1
On his first day in Calgary, the Governor General took part in a roundtable discussion organized by imagiNation 150 (i 150). Participants from the public, private, voluntary and cultural sectors responded to the Governor General’s challenge to Canadians to envision what they or their organizations will contribute to Canada in 2017, when the country celebrates its 150th anniversary. Mr. Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary, and Mr. Colin Jackson, i 150 Board Chair attended the discussion.

In the evening, His Excellency presented The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold level to 40 Alberta youth. He delivered remarks to underline the participants’ various achievements within their respective communities.

Avenue 15 provides homeless and runaway youth with temporary shelter and basic needs, as well as a comprehensive support system to assist them in reuniting with their families or finding alternative living arrangements. Her Excellency is with two of the youth who used those services.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston visited the Avenue 15 Homeless Youth Shelter. Not only did she meet with patrons, staff and volunteers to discuss its innovative programs and the youth it supports, but she also baked her infamous cinnamon buns with some of them!
