Royal Canadian Military Institute
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, unveiled the cornerstone for a new building housing the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI), during a military ceremony that took place in Toronto, on Saturday, June 9, 2012.

Governors General have a long-standing tradition with the RCMI: Lord Stanley accepted patronage in 1890; Lord Grey laid the first cornerstone of the RCMI headquarters in 1907; and The Duke of Connaught laid the cornerstone for the renovation of the building in 1912.

His Excellency then unveiled the cornerstone of RCMI’s new site, which is scheduled to open in 2013.

As patron of the organization, His Excellency addressed RCMI members and military regiments: “For more than a century, the Royal Canadian Military Institute has been preserving and promoting our military heritage. You also provide a friendly gathering place for members and affordable accommodation. Yours is a truly unique role in this community and in our country, with a history and mandate of your own.”
