Round-table Discussion and Canadian Citizenship Ceremony

In conjunction with National Citizenship Week celebrations, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, hosted a community-led round-table discussion on citizenship with new Canadians at Rideau Hall.

Organized in partnership with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), the round-table discussion encouraged new Canadians to share their stories and their collective reflection on citizenship.

His Excellency was the presiding official who administered the Oath of Citizenship and conferred citizenship certificates to 39 new Canadians from 25 countries.

The Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), delivered a speech.

Building a stronger Canada: Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) strengthens Canada’s economic, social and cultural prosperity, helping ensure Canadian safety and security while managing one of the largest and most generous immigration programs in the world.

The Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) is a national, non-profit organization that engages Canadians in citizenship through innovative programs, campaigns and partnerships designed to ensure new citizens are welcomed and included as equals, create meaningful connections among all Canadian citizens, foster a culture of active, engaged citizens and celebrate what it means to be Canadian.

Family members watched as their loved ones became Canadian citizens.

The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, 26th governor general of Canada and ICC Founder and Co-Chair, offered words of congratulations to the new Canadians.

The ceremony ended with the cake cutting.
