Upon arrival, His Excellency was met by Rear-Admiral Peter Ellis (on his right), Commander Combined Task Force 176, an amphibious task group led by USS Essex.

The Governor General, accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk, then proceeded to view a Platoon Live-Fire exercise with Canadian land forces, among them the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2 PPCLI).

Later in the day, the Governor General and the Chief of the Defence Staff visited the USS Essex at sea.

The USS Essex is participating in RIMPAC 2012. The joint and combined multinational force exercise began as an annual exercise in 1971, and since 1974 has been scheduled every second year. Canada has participated in every exercise since its inception.

At the end of the day, the Governor General's flag was hoisted upon His Excellency's arrival aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Ottawa.
