RIMPAC - Day 1
The Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada visited Canadian Forces members operating in Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012 joint and combined multinational force exercise. On arrival at Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam on July 19, he was welcomed by Rear-Admiral Ron Lloyd, Deputy Commander Combined Task Force.

On the morning of July 20, His Excellency, joined by Brigadier-General Michael Hood, Combined Forces Air Component Commander, toured the Combined Air Operations Centre and deployed Air Force units.

The Governor General and the Chief of the Defence Staff also visited Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Regina, currently at Pearl Harbour. They were accompanied by Commander Jason Boyd.

RIMPAC began as an annual exercise in 1971, and since 1974 has been scheduled every second year. Canada has participated in every exercise since its inception. This year’s exercise, being held over a six-week period from June 29 to August 3, involves more than 42 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft, as well as 25 000 personnel from 22 participating nations.

During his visit, His Excellency met with 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron crew, based in Bagotville, Quebec, and deployed for the RIMPAC 2012 exercice. Lieutenant-Colonel Darcy Molstad gave him a tour of the cockpit of a CF-18 Hornet.
