Olympic Games - Day 1

During their visit to the Olympic Village, Their Excellencies were accompanied by (from right to left) the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), and Mrs. Pawanjit Gosal, Mr. Marcel Aubut, President of the COC, Gordon Campbell, High Commissioner for Canada, and Mrs. Nancy Campbell. They were presented with a Team Canada Athletes’ Podium Replica Jackets by Mr. Aubut.

The Governor General held a replica of the Olympic flame.

Their Excellencies left the Plaza of Nations to visit the Athletes' Village.

During the Canadian Olympic Team Welcome Ceremony, the Governor General met with CEO and National Coach of Swimming Canada Pierre Lafontaine.

Canadian Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury presented the Canadian Flag to the International Olympic Committee representative.

"During the ceremony, as we sang the national anthem with our Canadian athletes, Sharon and I were overwhelmed with a great sense of pride. We truly felt like we, along with all Canadians, were part of the Canadian Olympic Team. In that moment, we witnessed the magic of the Games and its power to bring Canadians together to celebrate who we are as a country," said His Excellency.

Athletes, coaches and guests were entertained with cultural performances.

His Excellency spoke with Canadian athletes and wished them good luck.
