New Canadian Firefighters Memorial

The Governor General dedicated the new Canadian Firefighters Memorial, located at the corner of Lett and Wellington streets in Ottawa. The ceremony was hosted by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, in collaboration with the National Capital Commission, who provided the land the Memorial rests on.

Following the ceremony, the Governor General met members of families who lost one of their loved ones.

the ceremony included a march past with firefighters.

About 800 firefighters from across Canada attended the event.

The ceremony was touching.

Firefighters from across the country and members of the public were invited to attend the event.

The names of 12 firefighters added to the honour roll over the last year will be commemorated and their surviving family members will be given ceremonial medals.

The Governor General joined surviving family members of fallen firefighters to review the commemorative wall of Canada bearing the name of every fallen firefighter engraved over the province he died in.

During his speech, the Governor General stated: "The families, friends and colleagues of the fallen know the full extent of the loss we have suffered with the passing of these brave individuals. It is for the rest of us to remember their sacrifices. My hope is that all Canadians will visit this memorial, take the time to read the names inscribed here, and reflect upon their service to others."

The Canadian flag flew in between two fire trucks throughout the ceremony.
