Event in Celebration of the Diamond Jubilee at Rideau Hall

The Governor General delivered remarks during the event: "As we look upon this new painting and the new handrails in the main entrance, let us recall that this occasion is as much a celebration of Canada as it is a celebration of The Queen’s remarkable reign.By remembering this as Canadians, we honour Her Majesty’s devotion to our country."

Their Excellencies hosted an event in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, at Rideau Hall. It was the occasion to highlight the installation of the new painting of Her Majesty in the Ballroom.

The Christchurch Girls Choir sang the Royal Anthem following His Excellency's remarks.

Toronto artist Phil Richards also delivered remarks and shared touching personal stories linked to the creation of the painting.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled. The plaque was given to Mr. Roger Lindsay, the donor of the new Diamond Jubilee handrails that are now installed in the Front Foyer, commemorating Her Majesty's 60 years of reign.

Mr. Lindsay is seen here with Their Excellencies. The diamond Jubilee handrails stress the decorum attached to entering the Front Foyer, a space that, completed in 1913, has retained important architectural elements and details from the Edwardian period.

Bearing decorative and commemorative elements to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, the new handrails have been crafted using noble materials -- bronze and architectural glass -- to highlight the symbolic and historic importance of Rideau Hall.

This plaque can be seen at the feet of the handrails. “Sharon and I invite all Canadians and visitors from abroad to the official residence of the governor general in Ottawa to view these wonderful and tangible tributes to the devotion and steadfast service of Her Majesty as Queen of Canada.”
