2012 Army Run

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, participated in the 2012 Army Run held on September 23, 2012 in Ottawa. As Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency wished good luck to runners participating in the five-kilometre and 21-kilometre races.

Canada Army Run is a unique running event in which Canadians run, walk or roll with members of the Canadian Forces in half-marathon and five-kilometre events. Fundraising efforts and proceeds benefit Soldier On program and the Military Families Fund.

His Excellency, joined by Mr. Stephen Wallace, Secretary to the Governor General (right), participated in the five-kilometre run.

His Excellency cheered on participants as they ran or walked in the streets of Ottawa.

Prior to the injured soldiers' race, His Excellency, His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, Mrs. Laureen Harper, the Honourable Steven Blainey, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, gathered with participants for a prayer.

His Excellency had the opportunity to meet the oldest couple to ever participate in the Army Run. The couple served Canada during the Second World War.

The Governor General also took the time to speak with injured soldiers.

Thousands of runners invaded the streets of Ottawa during the half marathon.
