Visit to Rimouski

The historic site is home to the Onondaga submarine, decommissioned by the Department of National Defence. It is the only submarine accessible to the public in Canada.

In the afternoon, Their Excellencies visited the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père, home of the Empress of Ireland Museum and the Onondaga submarine. In addition, in collaboration with Parks Canada, the historic site highlights the importance of the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse.

The Governor General took part in a tour of the interior of the impressive Onondaga.

Their Excellencies visited the Marine Biotechnology Research Centre (MBRC) to learn about the research conducted by the MBRC and the services it offers. Their Excellencies had the opportunity to sample dried peaches, dehydrated using a technique developed by researchers of the MBRC.

Their Excellencies also met and spoke with students and researchers from the Université du Québec à Rimouski's (UQAR) three major areas of research: marine sciences, regional development and nordicity.

Continuing on with the visit to UQAR, Their Excellencies had the opportunity to speak with field researchers and to observe various study projects at the Aquaculture Laboratory, a satellite oceanographic laboratory of the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER).

The Aquaculture Laboratory is a key research tool for UQAR-ISMER researchers working in disciplines where access to water is essential.
