Presentation of the Pearson Peace Medal

Known for his sound judgment, balanced views and honesty, Canadian and foreign governments, as well as the United Nations, regularly call upon Mr. Regehr's expertise on disarmament. He is a seasoned and tenacious advocate of the causes of nuclear disarmament in particular, arms control in general, and sustainable approaches to human security and peace.

The Pearson Peace Medal is awarded to a Canadian who has personally contributed, through its working life and voluntary commitments, to causes to which Lester B. Pearson devoted his distinguished career: aid to the developing world; mediation between those confronting one another with arms; succour to refugees and others in need; equal rights and justice for all humanity; and peaceful change through world law and world organization.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Honorary Patron of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), presented the 26th Pearson Peace Medal to Ernie Regehr, O.C., during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, on January 21, 2011.

On this occasion, His Excellency recognized and honoured Mr. Regehr for his important contributions to the national and international dialogue on disarmament and peace:"You embody the qualities of a smart and caring nation. You are a leader in Canadian civil society, as well as a mentor and inspiration to many young people who seek a more just, peaceful world. The youth of this country have so much to offer, and I am delighted to welcome a number of young people to Rideau Hall today to witness the presentation of this award."

A jury of eminent Canadians selects the recipient of this honour. The medal is awarded by the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), a registered charity founded in 1946, with a mandate to educate and engage Canadians in support of the United Nations and its critical issues, which have a global impact.
