His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, accompanied by his wife, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, officially opened the 64th annual Glengarry Highland Games, in the small farming community of Maxville, Ontario.

One of the most spectacular events of the Highland Games is the Massed Bands, in which over 60 pipe and drum bands take the field in waves and play together as a single entity.

Each summer, at the end of July, the village of Maxville, Ontario, reunites over 20 000 people of Scottish descent from nearby and around the world to celebrate the annual Glengarry Highland Games. One of the largest Highland gatherings in North America, the annual Highland Games consist of a series of traditional Scottish competitions, including the famous caber toss, Highland dancing and the North American Pipe Band Championship.
