Visit and lunch with Canadian troops in Whistler

The Joint Task Force Games is responsible for supporting RCMP security operations throughout the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. During the Games, the Canadian Forces provide security through land-based operations near Olympic venues, maritime surveillance of the seaward approaches and coastal areas, and air mobility support and surveillance.

Upon her arrival at Calcheak Camp in Whistler, the Governor General was welcomed by Rear-Admiral Tyrone Pile, Commander Joint Task Force Games, for a tour of the Operations Centre.

For Valentine's Day, Her Excellency received flowers from Private Pearl Korentchenko.

Before having lunch with the troops, the Governor General delivered a speech in the camp's cafeteria.

Her Excellency took the opportunity to express to the troops how their work is essential to the success of the Olympic Games. She showed a picture of a carving made by a member of the Aboriginal community thanking military troops for being good neighbours.

Corporal Dustin Wiebe from Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) shared his working experience at Calcheak camp with Her Excellency.

Colonel André Corbould from Joint Task Force Games briefed Her Excellency on the role of the Operation Centre. Approximately 4,500 Canadian Forces personnel from across Canada and from all three services are involved in implementing security operations at the Games.
