OFFICIAL VISIT TO ALBERTA - 98th Grey Cup Championship

The trophy was carried by two RCMP officers. In 1909, Governor General Earl Grey donated a trophy for the Rugby Football Championship of Canada. The trophy, which subsequently became known as the Grey Cup, was originally open only to teams that were registered with the Canada Rugby Union. Since 1954, only the teams of the CFL have participated in the challenge for the Grey Cup.

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston began their official visit to Alberta in the city of Edmonton, where they attended the 98th Grey Cup Championship. “It is with great enthusiasm that my wife and I will attend the CFL Championship Game to cheer on two outstanding football teams,” said His Excellency David Johnston. “As a sports fan and as a true believer in the importance of physical activity, I am looking forward to sharing this unique experience with Canadians and I am more than honoured to present the Grey Cup to this year’s champions.”

CFL teams the Montréal Alouettes and the Saskatchewan Roughriders competed in the Grey Cup Championship game.

The Montréal Alouettes won the championship game and players walked up on stage for the presentation of the Grey Cup.

Accompanied by CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon, His Excellency presented the Grey Cup trophy to this year's winning team of the 98th Grey Cup Championship, the Montréal Alouettes.

The Grey Cup was raised as an official sign of victory.

The 98th Grey Cup Championship was held at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, November 28, 2010.
