Michener Awards Ceremony
Business and high-technology reporter in the CBC Parliamentary Bureau Julie Ireton, the 2010 Michener-Deacon Fellowship recipient, has been a reporter and producer at the CBC for more than 15 years. She will use the fellowship to investigate and report on intermediaries, double-dipping and cronysm in the federal public service.

The Michener-Baxter Special Award was presented posthumously to Michelle Lang, the Calgary Herald reporter who was killed in Afghanistan. Her parents Mr. Arthur and Ms. Sandra Lang accepted the award on her behalf.

The Montreal daily, The Gazette, has won the 2009 Michener Award for reporting on the mismanagement of a water management project, the largest contract in the history of the City of Montreal. Civic Affairs reporter Linda Gyulai and publisher Alan Allnutt accepted the award.

A citation of Merit was awarded to la Société Radio-Canada/Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for a reporting by the program Enquête that revealed an unhealthy climate in the construction industry in Quebec, including allegations of criminal acts. Mr. Pierre Sormany accepted the citation of Merit.

A citation of Merit was awarded to CTV Television for the program W5 who carried “Beyond Justice”, an in-depth report into three killings by RCMP officers in British Columbia and the failure of the justice system to hold police accountable. Mr. Robert Osborne accepted the citation of Merit.

A citation of Merit was awarded to the National Post for a series of reports revealed that the Crown and police in Ontario were conducting secret background checks of potential jurors in criminal trials. Mr. Douglas Kelly accepted the citation of Merit.

A citation of Merit was awarded to the Times Colonist for a series about First Nations housing revealed overcrowding, shoddy construction and threats to health on reserves on Vancouver Island. Ms. Stephanie Coombs accepted the citation of Merit.

A citation of Merit was awarded to the Globe and Mail for a series about a Canadian citizen, Abousfian Abdelrazik, who's rights had not been respected by Canada. He was denied a passport, despite being cleared of wrongdoing by Sudanese officials, and had been sleeping on a cot for over a year in the Canadian Embassy in Khartoum. Mr. John Stackhouse accepted the citation of Merit.
