Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History

Brent Pavey from Waterloo, Ontario, won for his strategy on creating Parliament Hill style question periods in the classroom to debate controversial laws.

Lindsay Hall from Woodstock, Ontario, won for her strategy on Historical Sources for the 21st Century: Significant Canadian WWII Battles and Contributions”, concludes with a unit on the Second World War, during which students hone their skills in source evaluation using alternative historical sources.

Her Excellency presented the Pierre Berton Award to actor, filmmaker and author Paul Gross to recognize excellence in popularizing history in the public media.

Mathieu Sasseville and Amy Wu were presented with the Begbie Canadian History Contest Award.

The Governor General presented the Kayak Kids' Illustrated History Challenge Award to the two winnters Zoé Banville and Charlotte McNeely.

Karen Wight and Alison England from Longview, Alberta, won for their teaching strategy on steer roping and wrangling to celebrate Alberta’s cattle ranching history.

Neil Stephenson from Calgary, Alberta, won for his strategy on empowering students with 21st-century tools as they employ cyberspace to explore Canada’s past.

Michel Marcotte from Saint-Adelphe, Quebec, won for his strategy on filming and starring in a documentary that unravels the mysteries of modern day Quebec.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, presented the Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History to seven teachers at Rideau Hall on November 20, 2009.

The Historica-Dominion Institute’s Great Canadian Question Essay Competition (post-secondary) was awarded to Tim Mak.

Neil Robinson from Calgary, Alberta, won for his strategy on creating a board game that propels students back in time to the 15th century.
