Tribute to Marie-Josèphe Angélique in Montreal – April 7, 2006

Governor General Michaëlle Jean lays flowers and reads a plaque commemorating the history of slavery in Quebec. On April 7, 2006, in Montreal, Governor General Jean took part in a series of events honouring Marie-Josèphe Angélique, a Black slave charged with arson and subsequently hanged publicly in Montreal in June 1734, not far from what is now Place d’Youville.

Governor General Michaëlle Jean launches the new educational website Torture and the Truth: Angélique and the Burning of Montreal. The launch was part of a series of events held in Montreal on April 7, 2006, to honour Marie-Josèphe Angélique, a Black slave charged with arson and subsequently hanged publicly in Montreal in June 1734.
