Official visit to Newfoundland and Labrador

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Jean-Daniel Lafond, with their daughter Marie-Éden, conducted their first official visit to Newfoundland and Labrador from July 6 to 11, 2006.

Following the official welcoming ceremony held on July 6, 2006, at the Confederation Building, the Governor General and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond met with the members of the House of Assembly, representatives of local patron organizations, and youth groups during a reception in their honour at The Rooms.

During her speech, the Governor General said “I know that you, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, have concerns to share, inspiring stories to tell, and so much to teach us and the whole country. And I look forward to all these discussions. While I will be limited to the island portion of the province during this first visit, rest assured that I will return to visit Labrador, and I very much look forward to discovering the realities of that region and the issues and aspirations of Labradorians.”

In the afternoon, Their Excellencies along with Marie-Éden visited the Cape Spear National Historic Site—north America’s most easterly point. They walked to the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the oldest existing lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador and learned about the significance of this site.

In Corner Brook’s Jubilee Field, the Governor General and Their Honours met with residents during a garden party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city. Their Excellencies had the opportunity to meet His Worship Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook.

The Governor General was bestowed the title of Honorary Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) at a ceremony held at the CCG Base in St. John’s Harbour. The title of Honorary Chief Commissioner of the CCG was established in 1976 during the mandate of the Right Honourable Jules Léger.

The Governor General shared the following words with those in attendance “As someone who spent her childhood near the Caribbean Sea, in which so many people lost their lives, trying to escape from tyranny or misery on rafts, or travelling on overcrowded ferries, I have always had a great deal of respect for the people who make our maritime way of life safe and possible, and I am grateful for the title you have bestowed on me. As my first item of business as Honorary Chief Commissioner, I look forward to boarding a Coast Guard vessel later today and travelling on that ship on my way to Trinity.”
