It is both a joy and an honour to be here with you on the banks of the St. Lawrence, in this city that has long turned its gaze toward the river and the world.
As commander-in-chief of Canada, I am especially pleased to welcome the crews of 9 ships representing 7 nations. Welcome. Bienvenue.
Every ship has its own history, its own culture, its own language.
Yet they all share the same oceans.
They face the same challenges.
And they share the certainty that no one nation can tackle major maritime challenges on its own.
The Rendez-vous naval reminds us that at sea, co‑operation is not optional. It is imperative.
International co-operation is essential to ensuring maritime security, protecting our waterways, responding to disasters, preserving our oceans and maintaining peace.
Long before Canadian ships began sailing these waters, Indigenous peoples already had a deep connection to them—shaped by millennia of navigation, knowledge and respect for the land.
Canada is a maritime nation. Our navy, coast guard, ports and coastal communities all play vital roles in our security and prosperity.
A few moments ago, I had the privilege of touring HMCS Margaret Brooke, one of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Arctic and offshore patrol vessels.
It gave me the opportunity to meet with a few of the extraordinary sailors of the Royal Canadian Navy. Whether safeguarding our waters, responding to emergencies, supporting scientific research or serving alongside allies around the world, your dedication reflects the very best of Canada.
Thank you for your commitment, courage and willingness to serve, here at home and around the world.
Finally, the Rendez-vous naval is an invitation to look to the river . . . and to the future.
Over the next few days, thousands of young people will step aboard these ships, filled with curiosity and wonder.
Among them may be those who will one day serve as officers, engineers, scientists and stewards of our oceans.
May this Rendez-vous inspire youth to dream boldly, to serve with purpose and to discover that the sea has always connected people.
