What a pleasure to be with all of you today at the historic Citadelle of Québec.

In fact the word ‘historic’ fails to do justice to this remarkable building and location.

During its history, the Citadelle has served as the site of many important military, diplomatic, social and cultural events. It is home to the Royal 22e Régiment and is a world-renowned tourist destination, and it has served as Sharon’s and my residence in Québec for the past seven wonderful years.

Together, we have presented honours here to many deserving members of this community, this province and this country.

We have opened our doors to tourists and members of the public to celebrate fall in this spectacular location.

We have marked the 100th anniversary of the Royal 22e Régiment.

We have welcomed distinguished visitors and even foreign heads of state here.

And today, we gather here to express our appreciation to all of you who have supported us throughout my mandate.

When I began my mandate as governor general, I called on all Canadians to join in building a smarter, more caring nation. As our partners here in Québec, you answered that call, and if Sharon and I have achievements to speak of it’s because of people like you, who have given so much of your time, talent and resources.

Canada is a constantly evolving work-in-progress, one based upon the ideal that diverse people can live and work together in an ever more inclusive, fair and just society.

It is my hope that our efforts to connect, honour and inspire people here at The Citadelle have helped foster the smarter, more caring country we all desire.

Sharon and I will always cherish our memories of this place and all of you who brought it to life.
