Mary Fitzpatrick, St. Lawrence, Newfoundland
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Over the past fourteen years, Mary Fitzpatrick has handcrafted more than one thousand quilts, mainly from recycled materials gathered from her friends and family, and donated the quilts to convents for distribution to needy persons. She also knits thousands of finger-puppets, which are used to comfort children undergoing blood tests. In addition she finds time to make regular visits to the local chronic-care facility and senior citizens' complex, as well as to many elderly residents confined to their homes. She remains active in her parish, helping at the church and with fund-raising activities.
