Jeannette Metcalfe, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Since the 1960s, Jeannette Metcalfe has made it a full-time mission to help her neighbours. A mainstay of her church, she served as president of the local community centre, as the chair of its building committee and its social convener. She helped out at a residence for single mothers, and participated in the work of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, Winnipeg's Library Board, the Civic Charities Committee and Meals-on-Wheels. She took on the task of visiting people with illnesses, and has provided not only her strength and support but also meals and transportation to medical appointments for patients - vital assistance that allows them to continue living in their own homes.
