Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Since his retirement in 1979, Murray Evan Squire has been active on behalf of senior citizens. For 18 years, he served as president of the Sarnia chapter of Canadian Pensioners Concerned, an organization founded to promote the dignity and independence of older persons by seeking fair treatment in respect of such issues as pensions, health care and housing. Never afraid of getting involved in a cause he believes in, he served as an informal spokesperson for the Lambton Seniors Association and is an active member of his church, having served as an elder and helped with preparing breakfasts and marking church anniversaries. With a gentle and careful approach to critical and controversial issues, he is always willing to share his knowledge, time and resources.
