Governor General's Caring Canadian Award

Laura Harper has worked to help the less fortunate in Canada and around the world. For half a century she has been active in her church, heading its women's group with patience and devotion. Seventeen years ago, she joined Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW), a Canadian charity that distributes bedding and other basic necessities to children in 31 developing countries. At her own expense, she has made 18 trips abroad to carry out SCAW programs, and she has also promoted the organization in Canada. She helped organize an executive committee for SCAW and has served as its head since 1998 to ensure that it continues to be a healthy, thriving children's charity.
