Winnifred Grace McAra, Edmonton, Alberta
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award

For over 30 years, Winnifred McAra has endeavoured to make a difference in the lives of seniors, youth and persons with disabilities in Edmonton. She has volunteered with the Strathcona Place Society for more than 30 years, keeping seniors and retirees active with a variety of services and programs. She is a dedicated member of the Edmonton Optimist Dinner Club, assisting young people who are deaf or hard of hearing to achieve excellence in schooling and community service. She served as chair and key organizer of several youth essay and communications contests for 12 years, and has also participated in a communication program and in the establishment of a choir for blind children.
