Joël Roy started volunteering in his village at the age of 12, as the organist and conductor of a children's choir that performed concerts to benefit causes dear to his heart. Later, he visited seniors as a volunteer with the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal, and also became a member of the Association des bénévoles accompagnateurs-accompagnatrices des personnes atteintes du SIDA, a volunteer group of companions of people living with AIDS. In 2000, he joined the PalliAmi Foundation and sees his involvement with end-of-life patients as a privilege.
