Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Lorne Gushue has generously given considerable time and energy to a diverse number of causes. He is a founding member and former vice-chair of the Northwest Territories Human Rights Commission, where he assisted in producing public service announcements on the topics of youth and homophobia. A board member and spokesman for OutNorth and a former member of AIDS Yellowknife, he has advocated for equality and has helped to raise awareness about the spread and prevention of HIV/AIDS. He is also a long-time member of the Yellowknife Choral Society, and for the past eight years, he has volunteered with the Yellowknife Coast Guard Auxiliary, providing essential marine search and rescue in and around Great Slave Lake.
