Angélique Pigeon and Gérard Roy, Beauceville, Quebec
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
In 1973, Angélique Pigeon and Gérard Roy founded the Foyer de la Fraternité shelter for homeless seniors in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. Since then, working with Beauceville parishioners, they have raised thousands of dollars each year to keep the shelter running. That money provides food, clothing and medicine for some 50 disadvantaged persons. They have also helped found the Marist Mission Cooperative House, an organization that provides young Haitians with the means to feed and educate themselves. In addition to their volunteer work on behalf of Haitians, they are active members of their church and numerous community organizations. Ms. Pigeon and Mr. Roy have given unstintingly of their time and talents to help give disadvantaged Haitians a brighter future.
