Gladys Osmond, Springdale, Newfoundland
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For over 20 years, Gladys Osmond has sent messages of support, hope and faith to soldiers deployed overseas. Sending approximately 500 letters a month, she has often invested her personal finances in postage and related costs. Along with the letters of encouragement, the soldiers also enjoy the treats of cookies, jams, books and small gifts. To assist her in this project, Mrs. Osmond has also organized the efforts of residents of the Valley Vista Retirement Home, who have become affectionately known as the "Granny Brigade". In helping the soldiers feel loved, respected and appreciated, Gladys Osmond portrays the essence of the Salvation Army motto: "Heart to God - Hand to Man".
