He has played a vital role in the preservation of our country's rich heritage. In his previous roles as provincial archivist of both Ontario and Saskatchewan, and now as National Archivist of Canada, he has helped to safeguard the integrity of historical records and to make them accessible to the public. In addition, he has worked to develop archival services at the local level across the country, proposing the development of a national system of co-operating archives and, over 20 years, helping put in place key national initiatives to realize this vision. President of the International Round Table on Archives and of the Champlain Society, and a leader in many heritage bodies, he seeks to ensure heritage is a vibrant force in our national life.

Ian Wilson has made invaluable contributions to the preservation of our history and our documentary heritage. He skilfully led the amalgamation of Library and Archives Canada and further developed its unique collections and services. Through public advocacy and educational outreach, he encourages Canadians to explore the original documents of their history. He is noted for establishing early partnerships to enable the large-scale digitization of fragile records and popular online resources. A respected leader among archivists here and abroad, he is frequently acknowledged for his works on history, archives and information management.
