He has demonstrated outstanding leadership and public service. A prominent lawyer, he left a successful practice to serve his province. First elected in 1956, he was appointed to Cabinet, as Minister of Education, then Minister of Labour and finally, Attorney General, during a political career which spanned three decades. Returning to private life, he became Chancellor of the University of British Columbia, where he is remembered by faculty and students as an insightful and sensitive leader.
