He is a leading authority on Quaternary geology. Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta, he initiated an interdisciplinary approach to this complex area of research. Under his direction, the department made major discoveries in dating methods, glaciation and climate change. He inspired his students to go on to play important roles in this field throughout Canada. Esteemed for his vast knowledge and leadership ability, he has headed numerous national and international scientific organizations. He also promotes the importance of the geosciences in addressing world ecology issues.
