Highly respected as a scholar and a professor, she remains one of Canada's foremost biographers. Her subjects include major figures in psychoanalysis and literature and her treatment of them has led to a reputation that is international in scope. She is the recipient of numerous honours for her work, including the Governor General's Literary Award for Nonfiction. Professor Emerita, she was the first female professor in University College's Department of English at the University of Toronto. She has, over the years, encouraged and inspired generations of students.
