As a teacher, author, speaker and museum administrator, he has won international acclaim for his devotion to promoting culture. As Director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, he was the driving force behind the renewal of the Museum, as evidenced by outstanding programming designed for specialists and amateurs alike. Under his direction, the Museum was transformed from a relatively unknown institution of mainly local interest to a museum of worldwide renown. He continues to contribute to the development of Canadian museography as Director of the National Gallery of Canada.
