As President and Vice-Chancellor of Memorial University, his visionary stewardship has piloted the institution into a strategic position, enabling it to excel in its role as a high quality resource centre, serving the community at large. As a scientist, he has represented Canada on a number of international commissions including the Law of the Sea Conference, that resulted in the extension of Canadian fisheries jurisdiction to two hundred miles in 1977.
