Born with cerebral palsy, he has been a persistent advocate of innovative outlets for skills development, job opportunities for the physically challenged and increased comfort allowances in provincial residential facilities. He has continued to serve his community in Nova Scotia since an operation in 1978 left him a quadriplegic. Using his ham radio, he has assisted with the rescue of more than sixteen vessels as an auxiliary member of the Coast Guard Search and Rescue unit. Undaunted, his determination has been a source of inspiration to others.
