A Toronto engineer, he has changed the face of the Canadian mining industry through his innovative work in metallurgical process technology, especially high-temperature processes to extract metals from their ores. His endowment of university chairs has led to expanded research and teaching capabilities in metallurgy, in areas such as aluminium production and hydrometallurgical extraction, the results of which are of vital importance to our economy.
