As a Professor of Pediatrics at McGill University, he has, through his research and work, helped to improve the health of children. A leader in his field, he established the first academic program in pediatric gastroenterology at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in the 1960s. He has played a significant role with the World Health Organization program dealing with diarrhoeal diseases in Bangladesh. His research has had a major impact on the treatment of these often-fatal conditions.
