Although he is a highly respected mathematician, now Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, he has become internationally known as a human rights activist whose persistent efforts to mobilize word-wide public opinion in opposing torture and persecution have been responsible for freeing several leading scientists and others imprisoned by oppressive governments.
