A geophysicist, a businessman and a natural resource management consultant, he is the leader of a movement to establish research organizations such as the Centre for Cold Ocean Research in Newfoundland, the Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization in Saskatchewan and the Centre for Frontier Engineering Research in Alberta. He has also given generously of his time to voluntary activities and has played a significant role in the Science Council of Canada, the Arctic Institute of North America, the Banff School of Advanced Management and the Calgary Philharmonic Society, among others.
