A former teacher, school principal and social worker in Cornwall, she founded the Maison Chevrier for single mothers and the Maison Baldwin for battered and abused women. Dedicated to serving others, she has been involved in opening other homes for abused women, has worked at a shelter for men in trouble with the law and remains active in several charitable organizations.
