A distinguished scholar, educator and humanitarian who enjoys an international scholastic reputation, he was founding Dean of Humanities at McMaster University, President of the Royal Society of Canada and Vice-President of the International Academic Union, in addition to being a strong supporter of cultural life in Hamilton. His archaeological expeditions to Italy attracted global interest and he is an invited lecturer throughout the world.
