The first North American to hold the prestigious position of Prefect of the Vatican Library in Rome, he is a leading scholar in the fields of medieval studies and palaeography. His achievements prior to this appointment, at the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto and elsewhere, have been notable and he has continued to make valuable contributions to the body of knowledge on medieval times, as well as ensuring, through his teaching, the birth of a new generation of scholars.
