Mr. Bruce Cockburn

Montréal, Quebec, Canada

Montréal, Quebec, Canada

Order of Canada

  • Officer of the Order of Canada

    Awarded on: 2002-05-01
    Invested on: 2003-02-21
The winner of several Juno Awards, he continues to use his talents to give voice to important social and environmental causes. Fusing art with human affairs, he warns us of the danger of complacency and continues to use his public persona to urge us to action. He has helped to raise funds for food distribution programs and has highlighted the First Nations' efforts to preserve the rain forests of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Choosing to work with government rather than against it, he partnered with the Canadian International Development Agency to raise awareness on the desertification of Africa, continuing to demonstrate that one can make a difference in the lives of many. This is a promotion within the Order.
  • Member of the Order of Canada

    Awarded on: 1982-12-20
    Invested on: 1983-04-20
He is a popular musician with a difference: a latter-day wandering minstrel whose songs reflect the discontents of modern society. But rising above the expression of anxieties is a strong Christian faith manifesting itself in ecstasy. From his origins in Ottawa he has branched out into tours of three continents and the issuing of many record albums.
