Born at Pilot Mound, Manitoba, he served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and was taken prisoner in Hong Kong; as a result of his imprisonment he lost most of his sight. On his release he trained in the rehabilitation programme of the Canadian Institute for the Blind, then studied economics and finance at the University of Toronto. In 1951 he entered the service of the CNIB, where his energies have been concentrated on services to the war-blinded.
