A native of St. John's, Newfoundland, she served the Department of External Affairs on several continents before being posted to the Canadian Embassy in Tehran in June 1978. There, she was in charge of communications throughout the Iranian Revolution and in the period during which the six Americans were being sheltered. In recognition of her devotion to duty while working under great stress over an extended period.
