His unswerving dedication to the improvement of health care in Newfoundland led him, in the face of skepticism and opposition, to found the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University. He has subsequently continued to play a vital role in the University as Vice-President (Health Sciences and Professional Schools) and as Pro Vice-Chancellor.
