Tom Smith's services to the larger community of Vancouver have been as a teacher and volunteer worker in the YMCA. In the latter, he developed an aquatics programme which resulted in Duke of Edinburgh's Awards going to many of the young people he trained. He is also a constant helper of youth in trouble. His writings for a juvenile readership convey his devotion to fitness, the learning of skills and a high ideal of Canadian citizenship.
